How can I apply for the visa?
Iran's embassies are responsible for the process of issuing a visa to Iran. Application is available for a tourist, business or transit visa.
Almost all tourism agencies can handle the whole process as your behalf and you may only need to update your personal information in special questionnaires. The process would not take more than 10 working days except in specific cases.
In order to apply for a visa you need to complete two or three application forms, supply up to four passport-size photos and pay the visa fee. The fee is around $50 per person but it may be less or more for different nationalities.
You may also need to provide a letter of recommendation from your embassy. If you are applying outside your country, a photocopy of your air tickets in and out of Iran and any student or press card is necessary.
Visas are generally valid for three months that is you must enter Iran within three months of issue.
Visitors from the Persian Gulf States don't need a visa to enter Iran. These states are: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
People from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and also Turkey can get a three-month tourist visa on arrival.
People from Japan can get a three-month tourist visa at an Iranian embassy with no difficulty.
If you are planning to visit Iran, the best way is to apply for a tourist visa which is valid for two weeks or one month. You can get an extension for your transit visa usually valid for five or ten days. Business visas are extendable once, sometimes twice up to two weeks each without difficulty. One extension of one month may also be possible in some cases. You can extend your visa happily in 7 different cities in Iran (Tehran, Mashhad, Tabriz, Isfahan, Shiraz, Kerman and Zahedan.
The extension process is normally handled at provincial police headquarter.
To get an Iranian tourist visa there are two steps:

Our Visa team in ISTO will submit your application forms to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Visa authorisation codes generally take up to maximum of 10 working days depending on your nationality (this can be much longer for Canadian, British and American citizens, who also require their fingerprints to be taken at the Iranian embassy).
Step 2: Get your tourist visa stamp
Once you have received your authorization code and letter from our visa team, you can then apply for the visa from your local Iranian embassy, to be issued in your passport.
In your local Iranian embassy you will need to provide your passport, the visa fee, 2 passport photos and insurance policy.
Some consulates may have different requirements.
You must check this before submitting your application.
